Your Questions about Breast Cancer Screening, Diagnosis, and Local Follow-up
Conclusions

Breast cancer concerns every woman.

It is important that women and consultant physicians get clear and coherent information in order to perform an appropriate medical checkup.
The part of the radiologist-mastologist is to detect suspicious abnormalities as soon as possible in order to help the multidisciplinary team to cure the biggest number of women suffering from breast cancer.

This objective is not easy to achieve because specialists can't "overdiagnose"; that is to say, they can't carry out useless operations or make a big number of patients needlessly anxious because patients feel in danger when an injury that may constitute a bigger risk of developing breast cancer is discovered.
The radiologist must also be careful and manage to detect tumours of small size because if he is not vigilant enough, the tumours may not be seen or be taken for harmless abnormalities.

Another significant part that the radiologist plays is to assess the disease spreading in the breast, both locally and remotely, and in that way he uses lots of techniques : ultrasound, MRI, micro or macrobiopsy samplings under radiological guidance, … All the information that the radiologist discovers will enable the multidisciplinary team to establish an appropriate treatment for each patient who is treated individually as early as possible, according to the kind of cancer (histological kind, presence of hormonal receptors, tumorous markers, …) and its spreading.

The curing as well as a longer survival of good quality due to treatments getting more efficient and more appropriate, do not only result from the addition of skills and qualities of the whole staff, from the consultant physician to, among others, the gynaecologist, radiologist, surgeon, anatomopathologist, oncologist and radiotherapist, to the nurse; but they also, and especially, result from an extraordinary team work.
