Screening

Detection mammography (breast radiography) for women between 50 to 69 of age.

You can make an appointment for a mammography according to two different ways :

1. TRADITIONAL SCREENING MAMMOGRAPHY

• The doctor radiographer is there during the examination.
He checks your radiographies before you leave the department and judges whether an echography has to be carried out immediately.
Later, after another deeper reading of your radiographies, the radiographer can judge that a complementary chekup is necessary. In this case, you will be informed by letter.

• The sum which is not repaid by your mutual association (deterrent fee) is borne by you : at the Bordet Institute, a mammography costs 15 EUR on average (3 EUR for VIPOS).

2. MAMMOTEST

Women between 50 to 69 of age will be able to benefit from a free mammography every 2 years : the "MAMMOTEST" which will have to take place under several conditions, determined by the legislation :

- Only in a certified radiology centre respecting the quality standards of the European Union (strict technical performance, double reading of the radiographies…).

- The prescription of your doctor will have to mention clearly that it is a MAMMOTEST. You will have to specify it imperatively when you make the appointment.

- The test includes two radiographies carried out by a woman technician and the presence of the radiographer is not compulsory : there is no direct reading of the radiologies; there is no breast ultrasonography nor additional radiographies on the same day.

- Then, the Mammotest is protocoled by a radiographer. Then, the radiographies are sent to a "reference centre" for a second reading by another radiographer.
The results are treated and encoded : this recording will permit the assessement and the follow-up of the programme. Of course, this implies your consent and this is why you will have to sign a "consent document" for the use of your personal data (on your request, you can refuse it; even so, you will benefit from the examination).

- The test is free : there is not any deterrent fee which has to be borne by you. The sum will be entirely asked to your mutual association : so, you have to show your SIS card.

- The certified radiological departments have to organise the mammotest "circuit" in a different way than that of traditional mammography. Therefore, it will not be possible for you to change the "circuit" on the day of the appointment and wish, for instance, a MAMMOTEST while you made an appointment for a traditional mammography (and vice versa).
