Summary :

It is a first in Belgium in the Bordet Institute with the introduction of Mobetron acquired thanks to foundation «Les Amis de L’Institut Bordet», this Wednesday, 10 March 2010.
The Mobetron is a light accelerator which enables a pre-operative radiotherapy which is very short and very accurate concerning the area surrounding the bed of the removed tumor.

Advantages :
- Better efficacity : An ordinary irradiation after breast tumor removal, lowers the local second offences rate : from 30% it decreases between 6 to 10%. According to a survey with 6 european centers, the second offences rate in 5 years is from 5% to 0% thanks to the Mobetron !
- Speed : the radiotherapy takes place in operating room, the patient still asleep, before that the cuts are stitched up.
- Less rays and more precision in the treatment area.
- Some side effects such as pain and burning sensations are avoided because skill is not irradiated.
- Reduction of the treatment cost : the mobetron enables to avoid 5 weeks of post-operative radiotherapy.
- Better quality of life : Breast cancer strikes 30% of women under 50 years who have a busy family and professionnal life.

 
Restriction : Unfortunately, the tumor has to be less than 2 cm and non-lobular. Nonetheless, the treatment is accessible to 50% of the 9.600 women suffering from a breast cancer, every year.

 

Chronology (preparations and operation with the Mobetron, minute by minute)
1st minute : The patient is brought in the operating room after various pre-operative tests.
10th minute : the surgeon takes the sentinel ganglion for urgent test thanks to the technique of molecular biology (ratified in Europe by th IB). Thanks to this technique, we can know if the tumor is already at the stage of metastasis or it is not. (If it is, the Moberton is not used)
15th minute : the surgeon removes the tumor.
35th minute : if everything is allright, the operating table (200 kg !!) is pushed towards the accelator.
45th minute : in the surgical field, a cone suited to the size and the angle of the treatment area, is put. It is positioned within a milimeter of the table with a remote control.
55th minute : the team, for safety, get out of the room
56th minute : 2 minutes of rays
58th minute : the surgeon stitches up the patient.
1hour 30minutes : the patient is brought in the recovery room.
