Subject : Subject : Bordet Institute moving to Erasme
La Capitale, (30/09/2005)
"Résultat de l'accord entre l'ULB et le réseau public Iris sur la constitution d'un 'cancéropole' " (“Agreement between the ULB and the public IRIS network to set up of a “cancer centre of excellence”)
Marc Beaudelot
Summary :
Negotiations have just closed between the 'Hôpital universitaire Erasme' and the IRIS network (regrouping certain Brussels’ governing Public Assistance Centres (CPAS) hospitals). The result is the creation of a “cancer centre of excellence” and the reconstruction of Institut J. Bordet on the Hôpital Erasme” campus (no longer on the Bordet site itself, as initially foreseen).
Links between the ULB and the hospitals of Brussels have existed for a long time. This close relationship allowed the creation of the Faculty of Medicine just after Belgium’s Independence.
When the Hôpital universitaire Erasme” was built in Anderlecht, Bordet did not move as the Faculty of Medicine remained located at 'Porte de Hal'.
According to Stéphane Lejeune, the director of Erasme, this relocation will regroup the whole of the cancer sector “under one roof” and improve the coordination between various sectors : indeed, some fields are better developed at Bordet than at Erasme and vice versa (neurosurgery, for example, does not exist in Bordet).
Still according to Stéphane Lejeune, this relocationn, foreseen in 2 to 3 years thereby allowing for the construction of a new complex, should normally not inconvenience the patients as the metro now goes to the Erasme campus itself. Moreover, most of patients are referred to Erasme and Bordet from all over Belgium (only 30% are from Brussels).
What about the hospitals of Iris Sud (Etterbeek-Ixelles, Baron Lambert, Molière Longchamp and Bracops)?
S. Lejeune declares that there should not be much incidence, and Yvan Mayeur states that Iris Sud should also be integrated in this project as this could help lessen rivalry between “hôpital Erasme” and the hospitals of the City.
