After having founded ‘The Friends of the Bordet Institute’ asbl, Mrs Tagnon and Mrs Van Halteren realised that there was a real need to make life of patients and staff more human. In 1973 – in order to achieve this goal through a better moral and material wellness – they created ‘Notre Boutique’ asbl.
Three shops were gradually set up in order to offer various services : sale of small items, sale of beauty and perfumery products, small catering (hot and cold), sweets, biscuits and chocolate, newspapers, books and magazines. Three shops were successively established within the St Pierre hospital and the Jules Bordet Institute. Successive restorations of the premises and their different fittings led to the closing of all the shops except only one – currently situated at the 1st floor of the Institute just near the Hospitalization Entrance. Every day including week-end you can find there a large range of products such as cold catering, drinks, sweets, biscuits, chocolate, flowers, newspapers, books and magazines. The staff – both composed of voluntary and paid workers – gives a warm and kind welcome to visitors.
Since 1989, the cafeteria has been offering a selection of dishes – from small catering to more elaborated meals. The friendly staff of this pleasant place will suggest you different dishes every day and according to the season. In the afternoon, you will have the possibility to have tea or coffee with pastry.
The staff is really happy to welcome patients, their relatives and the staff of the Institute in this cordial place constantly renewed. Indeed, some artists regularly exhibit their works and give part of the selling price as a gift to the association.
Mrs Tagnon also started selling greeting cards in favour of the Institute.
Each one of the three activity branches of the association gathers paid and voluntary workers together around the same goal : to bring their energy, enthusiasm, creativity and empathy together in order to provide a better wellness and quality of life to the members of the Institute – patients, nursing staff, researchers…
The association’s general meeting and boards of directors are only made up of voluntary and paid workers in charge of the management, the animation and the continuity of the association. All the activity branches of the asbl generate profits that are divided up for the benefit of two things. Firstly, for researches about supportive activities aiming at improving the quality of life of the patients; secondly, as a contribution to the research and improving efforts displayed within the Institute in its fight against cancer and according to the needs expressed by the Medical Council of the Institute.
