"Les Amis de l'Institut Bordet ont pour objet de soutenir la recherche médicale contre le cancer et de contribuer, par leur action, au développement de l'Institut Bordet, de faire connaître sa mission et de lui apporter, à cet égard, leur aide morale et matérielle."

Traduction : The aim of the "Friends of the Bordet Institute" is to support medical research against cancer and to contribute, through their action, to developping it, making its mission known and bringing it their moral and material assistance." Article 3 of the Statutes

At the end of the sixties, it had become obvious for the medical team of the Bordet Institute, and particularly for the Pr. Albert Claude and the Pr. Henri Tagnon coming back from the Rockefeller Institute and the Memorial Hospital of New York respectively, that, without private funds, the Institute would never be able to remain among the best cancer centres in the world.

So, in 1969, Madam Jacqueline Van Halteren and the Pr. Tagnon's wife founded the a.s.b.l. "Friends of the Bordet Institute" which aim and operating mode are inspired by the active Anglo-Saxon funds in medical research.

Modest association at the beginning, the "Friends" includes 10000 sympathizers today. They were gathered thanks to the dynamism and the voluntary work of a lot of personalities devoted to its cause.

If, at the beginning, the "Friends" chose to support only one cancer centre, as it happens the Jules Bordet Institute, it was because they judged necessary to put together all the apects linked with cancer (basic and clinical research and treatment) within the same institution. This permits to concentrate financial resources so that each activity should remain the most successful. In this way, "The Friends" favour the collective approach to all the problems linked with the pathology, as they are treated in the Bordet Institute.
