Humanisation of the Hospital

The voluntary workers of the "Friends"

The "Friends" of the Bordet Institute recruit and train voluntary workers to enable them to welcome the patients, bring an administrative help in the Services, in the library, help the nurses, etc.

The voluntary worker is not nursing the patient, nor is the close to the patient, nor a member of his family.
He is the link with the outside world and he gives the patient the opportunity to meet someone other than hospital doctors.

However, a training aiming at highlighting the motivations and the limits of everybody is essential. It enables people to acquire the techniques of defence which allows them to face and recognise the patient's anxiety, revolt and fears. It also enables people to realise that they are sometimes helpless in some situations and it allows them to avoid suffering from that kind of situations. The setting up of a voluntary worker team of the "Friends" especially trained to help the patients, is certainly a contribution to the desire of humanisation of the Bordet Institute.

Participation in the decoration of the premises of the Institute

- Paintings and reproductions in the passages.
- Organisation of exhibitions at the sixth floor of the hospital.

 

The Room Service of "Les Amis de l'Institut Bordet"

The "Amis" team has noticed that the afternoon could be really long between midday and the supper at 05.30 p.m. and that, especially for people who has no visit, it could be fine to drink a cup of coffee or of tea and to have the opportunity to speak with a smiling person who pays attention to his/her wishes.
"Les Amis" has then buy all the necessary equipment (trolley, cups, etc.) and since September, they have created a team made of volunteers who are motivated and enthusiast. They go to the rooms of the 7 floors of the hospital giving coffee or tea and a little biscuit to patients, selling them a little sweet when they want it, giving everybody a word and a smile.
This service occurs every day of the week from Monday to Friday. The patients being really enthusiast, they would like to improve the system.
To still better come to the patients' expectations, the team is looking for volunteers available during the week end.

Christmas market :

Each year, at the beginning of December, in collaboration with the "Fonds J.-C. Heuson" and "Notre Boutique", the "Friends " organise a Christmas market in the premises of the Jules Bordet Institute.

Open to everybody, it allows the patients, the visitors, the personnel and the sympathisers to do their Christmas shopping while supporting cancer research at the Institute.
