Pathological Anatomy

Mission

Jules Bordet Institute, the Cancer Research Centre of the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the University Hospital of St-Pierre, which is the head of the Iris network, share the same Unit : the Pathological Anatomy Unit, which has three missions : clinic, teaching and research.

The Unit takes in charge the samplings of Bordet Institute, the University Hospital of St-Pierre and 2 hospitals of Southern IRIS (Ixelles and Molière).
These samplings are surgical specimens, biopsies and cytological smears, as well as haematological samplings for cytogenetic examinations, that are both classic karyotypes which diagnose leukaemia and techniques of molecular genetics which provide prognostic factors.

Bordet Institute also has an activity of molecular biology which is developed (as the hole department) within the context of standard ISO15189.

Cancer is the unique pathology that Bordet Institute treats.

It is especially question of mammary and gynaecological, thyroid, urological, cutaneous (melanoma), pulmonary, digestive pathologies, as well as pathologies of the musculoskeletal system (soft bones and tissues).

St-Pierre Hospital treats pathologies that are more functional

(non cancerous pathologies) in digestive, gynaecological and thoracopulmonary fields.
