Infectiology (Medicine Dpt)
The Internal Medicine Clinic, which is under the responsibility of Dr Aoun, is part of the Internal Medicine Department headed by Prof. Piccart.
Mission (Activities)
The Infectious Diseases Department has many roles :
- The monitoring of patients that are febrile, receiving antibiotics, admitted to hospital or ambulatory;
- A consultation in internal medicine and / or for infectious diseases two half-days per week;
- The design and conduct of various clinical studies:
To this day, about twenty clinical studies – multicentric as well as unicentric – have been carried out by the Infectious Diseases Department, which is now under the direction of Dr Aoun. Multicentric studies are – among other things – carried out in cooperation with various organisations such as the EORTC (European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer), the pharmaceutical industry within the framework of comparative studies of new antibiotics or antifungal drugs, or within the scope of pharmacoeconomic and epidemiological studies. The type of the unicentric studies is observational, therapeutic, pharmacokinetic, but also epidemiological.
All these studies are carried out in agreement with the “Good Clinical Practice” and ethics committees (local as well as central).
- The participation in various international congresses, conferences and experts meetings where the results of several works conducted by the Jules Bordet Institute have been presented;
- The writing and participation in various articles published in scientific journals;
- The supervision of end of studies projects, especially for the DES (Professional Master) in cancerology-haematology;
- The involvement and participation in the working out of various international projects such as the MASCC score (a system to predict the risk of severe medical complications associated to febrile neutropenia), the writing of guidelines for the treatment of febrile neutropenia, etc.;
- Dr Aoun is also responsible for the Hospital Hygiene within the Jules Bordet Institute.
