Endoscopy (nurse sector)
Mission
The Endoscopy Unit, at the Institut Jules Bordet, is multidisciplinar.
Unit's activity :
1) Gastroenterology
2) Urology
3) Gynaecology
4) ORL
5) Pneumology
The activity is divided into two groups
- the examinations called "screening": patients voluntarily decide to undergo an examination in order to dismiss any risk of having the disease
- routine testing procedure: most of the time, there is a symptom which makes the patient consulting a doctor.
Etymology
ENDO (= inside) + SCOPIE (= to see, to look)
According to the organ we try to observe we talk about :
- gastroscopy : stomach
- colonoscopy : intestine
- cytoscopy : bladder
- hysteroscopy : womb
- laryngoscopy : larynx
- bronchoscopy : bronchus, and so on.
Part of the endoscopy nurse
The part of the nurse in endoscopy is essential : in this field, the collaboration with the doctor is very close while keeping the patient in the center of our concerns :
1) Reception and information of the patient
2) Patient assistance
3) Doctor assistance
4) Equipment cleaning and decontamination
5) Respecting care protocols
6) Unit management
7) Continuing professional training
8) Role of coordination

Conclusion
The endoscopy unit is developing a lot. Endoscopy is not a static area since the technical discoveries are frequent and enable us to learn always more about it.
Endoscopy is a field which develops a lot and requires a close and complementary collaboration between the doctor and the nurse.
The nurse's responsibility regarding patients is very important (reception, information, respect of protocols, manipulation and equipment decontamination,
)
Our relationships with patients are favoured because we go with them throughout the examination and sometimes well beyond it.
