The Bordet Institute's Modern History

Conclusion (Third Part)

Since it has been created, the Institute has been directed by the ULB and the CAP, which is currently known as the CPAS of Brussels; as a result it has been directed according to different conventions between both organisations; these conventions have been gradually adapted to the Belgian socio-economical data.
Called "Institution universitaire académique" in 1994 by a Ministerial Order, the Institute is working since 1.1.1996 as an independent association with a juridic personality according to the legal frame of the "Chapter 12" of the law concerning the CPAS.
Its activity consists of tree things : treatments, research and teaching (Rubrik "Specificity of Institut Bordet") and it has always kept since 75 years its social role as a public hospital that is at disposal of any population's level.

The annual budget of the Institute rises to 500.000 Euro not counting the different research subsidies.
The medical framework consists of 115.4 full-time equivalents and about 35 people who work as part-time staff.
Nine university professors are responsible for the teaching of degrees, post-university degrees and tenure courses; the staff consists of 16 university professors and 2 doctors in science or in pharmacology. More than 100 researchers work at the Institute as well.
The nurse staff, but also the paramedical, administrative, technique and worker staff consist of 452 full-time equivalents.
The Institute owns currently 154 hospitalization beds; that means that about 43.000 or 46.000 day hospitalizations can take place a year.
The number of admissions rises to 5.800 a year, and the average hospitalization's time is more and more short : less than 8 days. That is surprising since the pathology treated in the Institute is very complex.
The number of consultations rises to 51.900 a year, the day hospital treats annually about 11.300 patients.

We hope that even if social and macro-economical changes do occur currently in Europe, the Institute could continue with its medical work, its training, scientific and social activity for the Belgian population.
The qualification of women and men who form the medical team and of researchers confirms the main will of the Jules Bordet Institute : "to win cancer at all costs".
