Technical Examinations (Preparation)

Scanner

What is a scan ?

A scan is a process that uses radiology technology by sophisticated way.
A scan allows to obtain sliced images and to distinguish one organ from another very precisely.

On the day of the examination.

Go to the Radiology Service of the Bordet Institute on the 6th floor, 121 Waterloo boulevard - 1000 Brussels.
Bring your mutual insurance card and "a vignette" of mutual insurance

Before the examination ?

Do not eat or drink four hours before the examination

What does the examination look like ?

You will not be asked to undress. You will only have to remove any metal object (watch, jewellery, belt), because they disrupt the interpretation of the image. You will be positioned on an examination couch, generally on your back with your head on a headrest.

From this moment, it is very important not to move and to stop breathing when asked. After each image, the table will move forward or backward, but the machine will not touch you.
Hence, this examination is absolutely painless. The examination is often followed by the injection of a contrast medium. After the injection, you may feel a sensation of heat and a bad taste in your mouth. This is a normal reaction, a little bit uncomfortable, but it will not last for long.

The doctor controls the smooth running of the examination on a television screen and takes images of specific moments. It will make the examination easier if you manage to stay still and to relax, which will also improve the interpretation.

Particular cases

For certain examinations of the abdomen, you will be asked to drink an opaque liquid one hour before the examination
