Allogeneic stem cell transplant
An allogeneic stem cell transplant is a procedure in which haematopoietic stem cells are transplanted from a healthy donor to a recipient with a bone marrow disease. These stem cells can be taken from the bone marrow, the peripheral blood or the umbilical cord. An allogeneic stem cell transplant is a treatment often used to treat haematological cancers, such as leukaemia and lymphomas, and also non-cancerous pathologies such haemoglobinopathies and primary immunodeficiencies.
The allotransplant is indicated by a specialist doctor and requires a precise assessment by a haematologist specialising in bone marrow transplants.
The procedure requires hospitalisation during an average of 4 to 6 weeks in our haematology unit that has 18 beds and 8 sterile rooms.
Prior to the injection of the stem cells the patient undergoes what is known as “conditioning” chemotherapy to eradicate the haematopoietic cells and malignant cells, thereby preparing for the introduction of the new stem cells. The transplant itself is carried out in the patient’s hospital room, under continuous supervision, by means of an intravenous transfusion. Due to the conditioning effect the patient enters an aplasia phase lasting 15 to 25 days during which his or her immune defences and blood cell production are at their lowest point. This precedes the haematological recovery as the transplanted cells are engrafted.
Following the return home, consultations ensure the necessary monitoring and post-transplant treatment are adapted in accordance with the patient’s progress.
For an evaluation with a view to a possible transplant or other treatment, please contact our Haematology Department. Our specialised team will propose an in-depth consultation.
After an allogeneic bone marrow transplant it is essential to adhere strictly to the medication regimen and medical follow-up. Maintain a healthy lifestyle while remaining physically active and avoiding situations with a risk of infection.
By cooperating closely with your medical team you maximise your chances of recovery and a return to health in the long term.
We carry out more than 60 allogeneic transplants a year with particular expertise in haploidentical transplants in elderly subjects.
In cooperation with the H.U.B – Erasmus Hospital reference centre for diseases of the red blood cells, we propose the allograft of stem cells to treat patients with haemoglobin pathologies such as sickle cell disease.
We have national and international clinical trials that aim to improve post-transplant treatment by offering innovative treatment options.
