Lung cancer: standardize practices for the benefit of the patient

During the World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) held in Singapore from September 9 to 12, Dr. Mariana Brandao, medical oncologist at the Jules Bordet Institute, was able to present a new consensus definition to define the resectability of stage III non-small cell lung cancers, the result of long-term work carried out by many eminent members of thoracic oncology at the initiative of the EORTC-Lung Cancer Group and supported by several international scientific societies (IASLC, ESTRO, ETOP, ESTS, EORTC imaging group, ESP).

Current developments in thoracic oncology with the introduction of extremely effective combined chemo-immunotherapies in induction before surgical resection impose a common international definition in order to reduce discrepancies between centres and provide a uniform definition applicable in clinical trials.

The contribution of experts from the Jules Bordet Institute, part of the Brussels University Hospital, to this definition was major and fits perfectly with the mission of a Comprehensive Cancer Centre.
