The mission of oncological emergencies at the Institut Jules Bordet is to care for patients consulting for a medical emergency relating to their cancerous disease or its treatment. After being examined in the emergency room, possibly followed by a number of additional examinations, the patient will either be allowed to return home with the appropriate treatment or admitted to hospital (the diagnosis and guidance unit) for further examinations and treatment. The most serious cases will be admitted directly to the Intensive Oncological Care Unit.
This structure, linked directly to the diagnosis and guidance unit and the Intensive Oncological Care Unit, is the only one of its kind in Belgium as it is devoted essentially to patients suffering from a cancerous disease.
The oncological emergencies expertise at the Institut Jules Bordet lies in providing the outpatient care for the various complications encountered by the patient in the course of his cancerous disease and when following treatment.
The department has acquired recognised experience in certain specific problems such as febrile neutropenia.
Every autumn the oncological emergencies team participates in the international meeting in French dedicated specifically to the serious complications that can occur in patients suffering from a cancerous disease.
The department managers have developed a specific website on resuscitation and oncological emergencies: www.oncorea.com.
The department has a continuous intake of medical students (Master's) and trainee specialists in internal medicine and sister disciplines who follow training courses in oncological emergencies. They are supported during seminars and specific tours. In addition, the responsible doctors participate actively in organising the teaching at the start of the specialisation in internal medicine and in the sister medical disciplines in the framework of accelerated training.
