World first: The Urology team treats prostate cancer under local anesthesia alone!
Prof. Alexandre Peltier and the H.U.B. Urology team have achieved a world first: performing targeted treatment for localized prostate cancer using transperineal microwave ablation (TMA) exclusively under local anesthesia.
This world-first procedure marks the launch of a protocol that will ultimately enable a simple outpatient treatment pathway for selected patients. It represents another step towards increasingly minimally invasive therapies, offering greater patient comfort and faster recovery.
Today, H.U.B. is the only center in Belgium to offer focal therapy for prostate cancer, including targeted microwave ablation (TMA). A pioneer in this field, the team has helped demonstrate the feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of this technique through several pilot and multicenter studies, achieving an 81% success rate, rising to 92% in expert centers.
This world first is the culmination of more than 15 years of research and expertise in targeted prostate biopsies and the development of focal therapies for prostate cancer. The procedure performed under local anesthesia alone was carried out as part of the MILA clinical trial, conducted in collaboration with Cochin Hospital (Paris) and sponsored by KOELIS (Meylan, France).
This achievement is yet another illustration of H.U.B.'s commitment to delivering ever more innovative, precise, and patient-centered care, with a strong focus on quality of life.
