Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia

Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) is a rare form of blood cancer that principally affects the production of white blood cells. It develops slowly, often initially without symptoms, but can cause chronic tiredness, frequent infections and an enlarged spleen. CML is linked to a specific genetic anomaly known as the Philadelphia chromosome. You have come to the right place to understand this disease and to discover our personalised approach to treatment.
Treatment of CML at our hospital is based on a multidisciplinary approach that places the patient at the heart of the care. Our teams combine expertise in haematology and supporting care to propose innovative treatment adapted to the individual patient. The standard treatment includes tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) that target directly the genetic mutation responsible for CML. Today we can propose a life expectancy that in most cases is the same as for a person in good health while considerably improving quality of life. Regular consultations permit close monitoring to adjust treatment in line with the biological and clinical results.
We also propose psychological support programmes and educational resources to accompany our patients and their families throughout their treatment pathway. rs.
If you or a loved one are diagnosed with CML it is important to remain optimistic as present treatment is often very effective. Be sure to strictly respect the medical recommendations and rapidly report any unusual symptoms such as extreme tiredness or abdominal pain.
Consult a doctor if you notice persistent signs such as unexplained fever or recurrent infections. If in doubt we are ready to see you for a rapid and reassuring opinion.
Our hospital is also an active research centre for CML. A number of clinical trials are currently in progress to develop ever more effective treatment that is optimally suited to patient needs. Our doctors participate actively in national and international committees of experts, thereby contributing to scientific progress and improved standards of care. This commitment guarantees our patients access to the latest innovations and a globally recognised expertise.
