Het Translationeel Onderzoekslaboratorium voor Hematologie en Oncologie (THOR Lab) is gewijd aan fundamenteel en translationeel onderzoek in de hematologie, immunologie en cellulaire therapie.
De belangrijkste doelstellingen van het THOR Lab zijn:
- het bestuderen van de interacties tussen leukemische cellen en hun micro-omgeving;
- het identificeren van nieuwe prognostische biomarkers;
- het ontwikkelen van innovatieve therapeutische strategieën.
Binnen het domein van de cellulaire therapie richt het THOR Lab zich op de functionele karakterisering van mesenchymale stromale cellen (MSC’s) afkomstig uit verschillende weefsels, evenals op hun manipulatie om hun therapeutisch potentieel te verbeteren.
Het THOR Lab heeft tot doel het inzicht in de pathofysiologie van chronische lymfatische leukemie (CLL) te vergroten. Ons team heeft nieuwe cellulaire, moleculaire en epigenetische biomarkers geïdentificeerd die de prognose van patiënten verfijnen en de therapeutische besluitvorming ondersteunen.
Een belangrijk onderzoeksdomein betreft de interacties tussen leukemische cellen en hun micro-omgeving — zowel via direct cel-tot-celcontact als via extracellulaire vesikels — die een sleutelrol spelen in de progressie van de ziekte. Wij onderzoeken actief strategieën om deze pathologische interacties te verstoren.
Binnen het domein van de cellulaire therapie heeft het THOR Lab mesenchymale stromale cellen (MSC’s) uit verschillende weefselbronnen gekarakteriseerd. Ons onderzoek richt zich ook op de ontwikkeling van acellulaire therapeutische systemen gebaseerd op extracellulaire vesikels die door MSC’s worden vrijgegeven en die veel van hun gunstige effecten kunnen nabootsen.
Pilootstudies rond cellulaire therapie worden opgestart in samenwerking met klinische teams en uitgevoerd na goedkeuring door het Ethisch Comité van het Institut Jules Bordet.
Professor Basile Stamatopoulos is professor hematologie aan de Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), waar hij onderwijs verzorgt van het tweede bachelorjaar tot het eerste masterjaar in de biomedische wetenschappen.
Het THOR Lab is actief betrokken bij de opleiding van studenten van de faculteiten Geneeskunde, Biomedische Wetenschappen, Farmaceutische Wetenschappen en van de Hogescholen. Studenten worden begeleid tijdens immersiestages, bij het schrijven van hun eindverhandeling en gedurende hun vierjarige doctoraatstraject. Daarnaast nemen wij ook deel aan de begeleiding van scripties en doctoraten van studenten die aan andere universiteiten zijn ingeschreven.
