Radiotherapie behoort tot de belangrijkste kankerbehandelingen en wordt gebruikt als een onafhankelijke behandeling of in combinatie met chirurgie en/of systemische behandeling (chemotherapie). Het is de bedoeling kanker te genezen, de prognose te verbeteren of symptomen te verlichten.
Radiotherapie heeft een biologisch effect op het DNA en op de ontstekingsstatus van de tumor. De neveneffecten worden teruggedrongen met moderne technieken die het mogelijk maken de dosis nauwkeuriger af te stemmen.
De voorgestelde behandeling wordt tijdens de consultatie besproken met de patiënt, gewoonlijk na multidisciplinair overleg. De radio-oncoloog volgt de patiënt tijdens de radiotherapiebehandeling en neemt deel aan de opvolging na de therapie, in nauw overleg met de andere gezondheidsprofessionals.
De afdeling Radiotherapie van het Jules Bordet Instituut is een referentiecenter, prima uitgerust met apparatuur voor radio-oncologie en met een specifiek gespecialiseerd team. Wij behandelen elk jaar meer dan 2.300 patiënten, met een totaal van 30.000 behandelingssessies in een brede waaier van kankerpathologieën. Elke radio-oncoloog is gespecialiseerd in meerdere ziektedomeinen. Het fysica- en engineeringteam staat in voor de berekeningen voor het behandelingsplan en voor de kwaliteitsborging; het integreert nieuwe technologieën in de klinische routine. De radiotherapeuten staan in voor de simulaties en voor de dagelijkse patiëntbehandelingen.
Dankzij onze uitrustingen en ervaring kunnen we patiënten een complete waaier van technieken aanbieden, en blijven we in de spits van de innovatie om de doeltreffendheid van de behandeling te verbeteren en haar toxiciteit te verminderen. Enkele voorbeelden van uitrustingen en technieken:
- 4 conventionele lineaire accelerators, uitgerust met oppervlakgeleidende technologie.
- SBRT (stereotactic body radiation therapy) voor laesies in de hersenen, longen, lever, beenderen en lymfenknopen
- DIBH (deep inspiration breath hold) voor borstkankerpatiënten, waar aangewezen in combinatie met VMAT
- TBI (total body radiation)
- Gamma Knife-eenheid (site van Erasmusziekenhuis): Radiochirurgie van hersenletsels
- Lineaire accelerator voor IORT (intraoperatieve radiotherapie), waarmee bij sommige borstkankerpatiënten post-operatieve radiotherapie kan worden vermeden
- LDR-prostaatbrachytherapie (lage dosis ratio) (‘seeds’)
- HDR-brachytherapie-eenheid (hoge dosis ratio), voor de behandeling van
- gynaecologische kankers (waaronder interstitiële brachytherapie)
- slokdarmkanker
- longlaesies
In 2020 zijn we toegetreden tot een wereldwijd researchconsortium met als missie een geïntegreerd MRI-gericht radiotherapiesysteem te implementeren. De Elekta Unity MR-linac is de eerste machine in de hele wereld die MRI met ‘high field’-kracht en een lineaire accelerator combineert tot één enkel systeem, zodat de behandeling dagelijks kan worden aangepast aan de tumor die tijdens de behandeling realtime zichtbaar is. De MR-linac wordt meteen in het nieuwe gebouw van het Jules Bordet Instituut geïnstalleerd. Volgens plan zullen we vanaf begin 2022 patiënten kunnen behandelen met deze revolutionaire machine.

De Radiotherapie-afdeling van het Jules Bordet Instituut is een opleidingscentrum voor radio-oncologen, medische fysici en radiotechnologen in opleiding.
Het gezondheidszorgpersoneel werkt ook mee aan de academische opleiding voor radiotherapie en oncologie, medische mastergraden aan de ULB, bestralingsbescherming, interuniversitaire opleidingen en de voortgezette ontwikkeling van dokters, verpleegkundigen, technologen enz.
